Battle of the Short Hills 240th anniversary reenactment

June 24, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Battle of the Short Hills 240th anniversary reenactment

Return to June 26th 1777, when the farmland of today’s Union County became a battleground where American patriots went head to head with the British Empire. Holding off a two-pronged attack, the fledgling New Jersey Brigade fought a gallant retreat, keeping the advancing redcoats at bay while the rest of the Continental Army marched to the safety of the Watchung Mountains. Though substantially outnumbered, the Americans’ strategic move ensured the survival of the state as an American territory and forced the British to try a new approach to capturing Philadelphia.

During the two-day reenactment, Saturday June 24 and Sunday June 25, see the story of the Battle of the Short Hills take place in part where it originally occurred! Talk with reenactors who bring 18th century military camp and battle life to the 21st century, representing both sides of the conflict. Find out how people from all walks of life became officers, foot soldiers and camp followers. More than 40 reenactor groups have committed to participate, with more joining every day.

On Saturday, June 24, you’re also invited to join the FreeWalkers as they walk the six mile battle trail from the Metuchen Train Station to Oak Ridge Park. More information is available on the walk website.
